T--- Al-right listen, we are going to do Google Earth today and its capabilities. Any body can remember back a few or may be even before Christmas that we did Google Earth twice? What is the first thing we did in Google Earth?
S---Some students raise their hands up
T--- Pointing to one student
S---Answering (please feel free to add here) and teacher prompts students to answer the first thing they learned
S---The three land marks
T---Yes the three famous land marks and second time we went to Google Earth recently (T calling out a particular students name)
S---2 or 3 students answering
T---(T not satisfied, guiding the students towards the specific answer)ya..but what was the specific(I cannot understand what the students answering,please feel free to add here)
S---Street view
T---OK street view. We are going to do something different in Google Earth today. We are going to create a tour. So if you want to go on a guided tour, people lead you to different places in sequence OK. You can do that in Google Earth by going into separate places and you can save it in one Google Earth file and then you can double click that file on your computer which will automatically open up the Google Earth and it will take you to places like a trip like a movie. So its pretty cool to do. So lets refresh our brain OK. To get the Google Earth where we go? Is it an Internet website or a program?
S---Program
T---Program. Ya up there(pointing the icon on the white-board). If its not there it will be on your programs just here (T opens the Google Earth program using Start). Let me show you a couple of things. I am not going to talk long because you guys have used this before. Don't waste too much time scrolling the Earth as you usually do. Ok refresh your brain a little bit. To make things look more interesting, how do you make 3D buildings to appear?
S---Layers
T---Yes Layers. (T is using smart-board showing and describing) You have to drag a little bit up here and then you can see 3D buildings. Click on 3D buildings wont work here, you have to click on the square. You can turn off some of the things here to make it load quicker.
S---OK
T---Al-right so the things we are going to look at today is 'My Places' (T pointing towards it). Under 'My Places' we are going to create a folder for the places we are going to visit. While we are going to visit, I am going to show you now the first question and who gets to answer to the question right first. I will show you some countries and you have to tell me what these countries have in common.
S---They all are countries.
T---They all are countries right. What do they have in common?
S---world cup
T---Bingo. They all are in the World Cup
S---Ya ya
T---Ok. I will keep this list on the board and what you guys are going to do is to find the capital cities of many of these countries as possible. You may know a couple and there are some you may not know like the capital of Côte d'Ivoire may be or may be a difficult one. So you got use your search engine skills on the Internet to find out the capital of countries you do not know. Ya so let me just show you quickly the capital of the England-London. So first of all, I am going to right click 'My Places' and then 'Add' new 'Folder'. I am going to call it 'World Cup Countries' and then click OK. So that's underneath 'My Places'. Now let me type 'London, England'. So if the Google is not zooming in like that you might have typed in something wrong. So you got to look here for the suggestions ok. Remember London is not so hard to find. So we need to make London our first stop on our tour. So we are going to use the little pin called 'placemark' just like the one you find sticking on to board. So we are going to place it by clicking on it and naming it as 'London' and for description type in 'Capital of England' and click OK. So the little pin drops right there and London goes under 'World Cup Countries'. So we need to click back up on 'World Cup Countries' before we start the new one. I want to do Paris-France as well because everybody knows Paris-France. Type in 'Paris France'. Click Bookmark and type in Paris and for description 'Capital of France'. So you will see that 2 things underneath the 'World Cup Countries'. So lets say these are all the world cup countries and I am going to right click on the 'World Cup Countries' and click 'Save place as' OK. We are going to put it in student common drive (grade4/your-class/technology/GoogleEarthTour).You are going to work in teams of two OK. So if there is an odd number, we will pair up those people OK. So name your folder in the name of the team members. So that's what you need to do. Whoever gets the most number of countries win. So you have got 25 minutes OK. So I think you guys are fluent in Google Earth and here we go. (Teacher pairing up those who are confused and students working on activity)

T---Al-right come up to the front for couple of minutes please. I just want to show you how these actually looks like when you Google them OK. I will go through them pretty quickly (T opens the file submitted by one team). Lets see what you have done here. Just double click on the file. It will open up a file on Google Earth and so we can click a play button which will hop from each capital city in one tour hopefully. (The file taking long time to open. Meanwhile teacher find out that a group submitted their work without their names and comment about it. Teacher find another way to open the file by opening the file from the program 'Google Earth'.) Click the play button here and see what goes on. Its kind of blurry . Its OK and its jumps to another capital. So you can see that this can be used in any of your other classes as well like in projects about volcanoes around the world. So its very useful for other subjects. Its blurry because there are lot of different things that got turned on the layers. I will turn off 3D buildings, street view, terrains. So when we turn off these things.....you can see in more details. T---So what did you find the hardest thing about it?
S--- Answering T---Finding the capitals were the hardest part of the task?.
S--- Typing
T--- You guys have done Google Earth before right? So you knew what you were doing. May be when we are giving title we should have given 'Washington,capital of America' in the title instead of in description. So when we do the tour we can tell what it is like the capital of which country. So you guys did a lot. Well done! Any time you can click on any capital of the tour and pull back midway of the tour . That's interesting. I never saw that before. Cool! So guys just try to remember next time when you do the Google Earth tour using placemark because its very handy to create one single file to create a bunch of geographical areas. So that's it.
